For the meeting last Wednesday we were fortunate to have Matthew McKnight from Autodesk give a very interesting talk about the transformation that is taking place in product design. We learned about Autodesk's CAD packages, especially Fusion 360, which is particularly relevant to hobbyists. Matthew also talked about the emergence of generative design, whereby the CAD software itself iteratively optimises a structural design for minimum material with maximum strength. Finally we learned about Pier 9, Autocad's leading edge development centre in San Francisco where "artists in residence" get to explore all the latest design technologies and make what they design on a array of sophisticated machinery.
Matthew made us a couple of generous offers. Firstly, for any member who is headed for San Francisco he will arrange for a tour of Pier 9. Secondly, if there is sufficient interest he will run a workshop for club members on Fusion 360, most likely on a Saturday. Finally, he would be prepared to arrange a group tour of Moldflow in Kilsyth. Moldflow started out as an all-Australian leader in software modelling the flow of plastic in injection molds, and is now owned by Autodesk. If you are interested in any of these please leave a comment below and I'll see what I can arrange
